El 1512, en el context de la conquesta del regne de Navarra i despr\u00e9s de la presa de Pamplona pel Duc d\u2019Alba, la tropes navarrofranceses, en retirada, van saquejar i van incendiar Hernani. La primitiva parr\u00f2quia, situada extramurs, va patir grav\u00edssims danys. \u00c9s llavors quan es va veure la necessitat de construir una esgl\u00e9sia dins del recinte emmurallat d\u2019Hernani. <\/p>\n
Juan L\u00f3pez de Amezqueta y Alcega va cedir part d\u2019un terreny extramurs al costat de la muralla, de manera que l\u2019esgl\u00e9sia formaria part de la nova defensa. D\u2019aquesta manera, entorn de l\u2019avui desaparegut palau Alcega, sorgia un nou gran espai cridat a convertir-se en el nou centre neur\u00e0lgic de la vila; la pla\u00e7a Major, actual pla\u00e7a Gudarien. <\/p>\n

Anys despr\u00e9s d\u2019acabar l\u2019edifici, \u201csiendo tan suntuosa la iglesia\u2026 desdice mucho por la falta que tiene de remate\u201d, i despr\u00e9s de nombroses vicissituds, finalment es va aixecar aquesta magn\u00edfica torre de base quadrada, dissenyada per Francisco de Ibero, que es va finalitzar el 1764. El 1795 va quedar rematada amb el campanar i, posteriorment, la curiosa ubicaci\u00f3 en cantonada del seu rellotge. <\/p>\n

El p\u00f2rtic barroc, de grans dimensions i indubtable valor art\u00edstic, \u00e9s obra de Mart\u00edn Zaldua i data del 1706. T\u00e9 una composici\u00f3 rectangular, flanquejada per dues pilastres que suporten el front\u00f3 triangular. Sota el gran arc podem veure l\u2019escultura de sant Joan Baptista, patr\u00f3 d\u2019Hernani (obra en fusta d\u2019Ambrosio de Bengoechea, que inicialment la va elaborar per a l\u2019altar major el 611), i als costats de la porta, les escultures de sant Pere i sant Pau. <\/p>\n

A l\u2019interior destaquen el retaule major (B\u00e9 Cultural amb categoria de Monument), joia barroca de Bernab\u00e9 Cordero, del 1656, i la imatge del Sant Crist Crucificat (g\u00f2tic, dels segle XIII-XIV), la imatge m\u00e9s antiga de l\u2019edifici,\u200bportada, amb tota probabilitat, de l\u2019antiga esgl\u00e9sia parroquial. Tamb\u00e9 en destaquen els altars laterals de sant Josep (amb el seu sagrari, del retaule primitiu), de la Mare de D\u00e9u del Rosari, de la Mare de D\u00e9u dels Dolors i del Sant Crist Jacent. A l\u2019interior, a m\u00e9s, hi ha la sepultura de Juan de Urbieta (segle XVI) o les restes d\u2019Agust\u00edn de Cardaveraz (1703-1770). <\/p>\n

El 2016 es va erigir a l\u2019antiga sagristia la capella de Ziku\u00f1agako Ama, on es troba la preciosa imatge de la Pietat, aut\u00e8ntic tresor del segle XVI. La figura de Ziku\u00f1agako Ama \u00e9s una reproducci\u00f3, ja que l’original es va robar el 1979. <\/p>\n
